Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent. It’s called Ash Wednesday because as a sign of repentance, believers through the centuries have received the mark of an ashen cross on their forehead. The ashes remind us of God’s words to Adam when he sinned- “remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” and it reminds us of the Old Testament practice of wearing sackcloth and having ashes placed on the head as a sign of spiritual poverty.

LENTEN DEVOTIONAL

Beginning with Ash Wednesday and continuing through the first few days of Eastertide, we invite you to use these daily devotional cards to deepen your spiritual walk through Lent. You might place the stack of cards by your bed to read first thing in the morning or right before you sleep at night. Display the prayers that resonate with you the most. Perhaps use the questions as prompts to journal and reflect. Day by day, may these prayers remind you that God is by your side, through your doubt, your faith, and everything in between.

The prayers are written by Rev. Sarah Are Speed, daughter of former WPC Associate Pastor Tom Are (who preached at our 200th Anniversary). The cards are available in the Narthex. You can also follow the daily devotionals on our Instagram and Facebook stories.
