Our partnership with Charleston Moves has helped us better understand what is at stake in the debate about building a pedestrian crossing at the North Bridge. Recent S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control studies show an alarming life expectancy gap of close to 15 years between West Ashley residents and our neighbors in North Charleston just across the river. There are many contributing factors, all of which must be addressed, and the construction of a pedestrian bridge would save lives and enhance the lives of those who need access to grocery stores, community services and health care.

Charleston County is hosting a drop-in meeting at Westminster Wednesday from 4:00 – 7:00, and we have the opportunity to be a voice for our neighbors. Please come (even for a short while) share your support in-person or attend virtually.

Improving access to life-sustaining resources does not by itself solve the problem, but it is a good start, and it is the right thing to do.
