“What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord;
I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed beasts;
I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats.When you come to appear before me, who has required of you this trampling of my courts?  Isaiah 1:11-12

 These words from Isaiah are unsettling.  The people have been offering the sacrifices, yet their hearts are not in it.  They are just going through the motions, trampling the courts of the Lord in vain.  It’s a great image- if Isaiah spoke to us today, instead of telling us we’re trampling the courts of the Lord, he might tell us that if our hearts are not in it, all we’re doing on Sunday morning is messing up the carpet in the sanctuary. We are all guilty of not being fully engaged in worship from time to time, and Isaiah is calling us out on it.  He’s calling us to the kind of worship that God desires: where we are fully present, engaged, growing, and being transformed so we’re not the same on the way out as we were on the way in.  That’s God’s vision for worship.  What is yours?

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Daniel
