On Sunday I had the opportunity to go to Orangeburg and preach at the installation service for First Presbyterian’s new pastor, Dr. Darren Bess. It was a moving service for Darren, the church, and for me. Having grown up in that church, it was special to see many of the people who nurtured me along the path of faith and helped me discern a call to ministry. I’m grateful for the occasion to thank them again for remaining true to the promises they made at my baptism- to teach me the faith, help me discover my gifts, and challenge me to follow the Lord with all my heart.
Those moments Sunday caused me to think about the youth and children here at Westminster and the ways we are seeking to nurture their faith. I see parents committed to raising their children in the faith; I see grandparents bringing their grandchildren to church; I see teachers and leaders using their gifts and time to point our young people to the Lord. Seeds are being planted every day.
This Sunday is Children’s Sunday at Westminster. I’m preaching from the part of Luke where Jesus says, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God,” and the children will lead the various parts of the 11:00 service. Join us in worshipping the Lord and nurturing the faith of these little ones!
Yours in Christ,
