Happy Valentine’s Day!
On a day of love (and a day that sends many people into hiding!), how about some words about love from 1 John 4? What does God say about love?
First, love is to be celebrated because love is from God! Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God. (v. 7)
Second, to understand the true meaning and nature of love, we look no further than Jesus. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. (v. 9)
Third, our ability to love one another- in all relationships, comes from the love God pours into us. The ones most connected to God are the ones with the greatest capacity to love. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (v. 11)
Fourth, the way we show love is a witness to the One who is the source of love. God is known when we love! No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. (v. 12)
And fifth, the primary love in our lives is the love we receive from God. It is the fuel for a rich and full life. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. (v. 16)
So, however you celebrate (or don’t celebrate) the day, take a moment and relish the truth that God loves you!
