Hurricane Matthew has left town, and we’re recovering from the mess he made while visiting. While most people in our area escaped with only a messy yard and extended power outages, there are some nearby and many far off who have extensive damage. We remember them in prayer and look for ways to offer assistance as able.

As the sun set last night and we were lighting candles and double checking our battery supply, it occurred to me how different life with power is from life without power. It’s an apt analogy for life with or without the Holy Spirit. Consider:

• “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 when Jesus is talking to his followers before he ascends into heaven.
• “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26 when Jesus promises the Holy Spirit to his disciples and tells them the difference the Spirit will make.
• “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 when Paul describes the fruit produced by the one who walks with the Spirit.

In your walk with the Lord, are you living with or without power? Are you plugged into the Spirit or feeling around in the dark? God has so much for you in this life. Are you ready to get your power turned on?
