My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.  2 Corinthians 12:9

All through the Scriptures, we see God choosing the ordinary and the humble to accomplish his will.  He chose an insecure Moses to lead the Hebrews out of slavery.  He chose the shepherd boy David to lead a nation.  He chose a young girl named Mary to give birth to the Savior of the world.  In Jesus, we see the way of God is humility: both in who he is (emptying himself for the incarnation), and the example he set (taking the towel and basin in order kneel and wash the feet of his disciples).

God still functions that way in the world today.  Noted scholar Henri Nouwen talks about how he truly found the ways of the Lord after leaving Harvard and being a priest to a community of mentally handicapped adults.  My own experience is that I am more in touch with God when I’m rubbing shoulders with the weakest and most vulnerable members of society- not the wealthy and most powerful.

It should not surprise us that the path to God is one of embracing weakness- both in ourselves and in others.  In weakness, you find the all-sufficient grace of Jesus and the true power of God.

Yours in Christ,
