When I was growing up, we never left the Christmas decorations up much past Christmas morning. We even had the idea that it was bad luck to leave them up past January 1! When I later learned about the season of Christmas and the 12 Days of Christmas that last into the New Year, my mind was blown. Now I’m tempted to follow the pattern of those who do not decorate at all until Christmas Day, celebrating for 12 days until Epiphany, which is January 6.
Is Christmas already over at your house? Have you put everything away and moved on to thinking about the New Year? Maybe it would do us good to dwell a little longer on gift that we have been given, to keep the carols fresh in our hearts, and to hold on to the wonder of the season. Or, as a changed Ebenezer Scrooge says, “I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach!”
Merry Christmas, still!
