For many people, Christmas is a time of great joy and anticipation. It is good to be gathered with family and friends, and the pleasurable things in life seem even better this time of year.
For others, Christmas marks a season of increased loneliness, depression, or grief. The sorrow of life seems especially acute this time of year, making it hard to participate in the wonder and joy of the season.
When the prophet Isaiah spoke the Word of the Lord concerning the coming of the Lord, here is his message for the brokenhearted:
He will tend his flock like a shepherd;
he will gather the lambs in his arms;
he will carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead those that are with young. (Isaiah 40:11)
I find those words to be some of the most tender in all of Scripture. The Lord of the universe has come to carry us. If you are finding this season to be a tough one, cling to the one who promises to gather you up in his arms.
Peace of Christ,
